Autumn in the North Cemetery.

Sixty miles west of Boston, Massachusetts there is the small New England town of Sturbridge. Located at the junction of I-90 (The Mass Pike), and I-84 it has become known as the "Crossroads of New England". The town was first settled over 300 years ago, and like other small New England towns it has grown just enough over the years to be in a difficult place today. How do we embrace the future without forgetting how we got to our present? How do we attract the right kind of growth, and maintain who we are? And, what about our culture out here in Central Massachusetts?

These pages will cause one to think about how to protect what we have, our future direction, and how to move on in the very best way.

Those thoughts, and other ramblings, will hopefully inspire more thought, conversation, action, and occasionally a smile...

...seems to be working so far

Short And Sweet

We went to the new restaurant, Playa del Carmen, at the site of the old Rom's, on Tuesday night.

Here is my review.

  • The decor is Mexican.
  • The staff are incredibly good at attending to you.
  • The food is excellent.
  • The food is way over priced.
  • There are no clocks in the kitchen. It took over 35 minutes for a taco salad ($9.50), and fajitas for two ($27.50) to arrive at our table.

First week in business, and things are still being worked out, I understand, and I imagine they will work out those things quickly.

Give it a try.

  1. Well, I could bear the wait with a nice margarita (or two) but was sad to hear about the "way over priced" - faitas for two at $27 does sound steep. But I'll give it a try at least once anyways. Brian

  2. Wally, my wife and I, along with some friends were there Saturday evening. It was a great experience. Yes there was a wait and yes the food took a little longer than expected to arrive, but it was fresh, very authentic, and delicious. It provided a warm and friendly environment to enjoy time with friends.

  3. Tom, I agree. Warm and very friendly, and the food was very good. And, to clarify, it was "Fajitas for Two", not two fajitas.

  4. It takes a lot to do good business in Sturbridge. I have read all the reviews on the recently opened restaurants. They will surely have to meet the standards of Applebee's, Annie's Country Kitchen, Uno's Pizza & Picaddily Pub (who have been around for a good while) if they want to survive. Prices and Portions is all that matters in this tough economy. Good Luck to all of you.

I had lunch with a friend there today. Service and food were fantastic. The guacamole is borderline addictive! Can't wait to go back.

  6. I went there on Thursday night and the food was good (I'd have to agree that the guac is addictive). I think that the resturant still has some bugs to work out but it's a great addition to Stubridge.

    Hello,
We, a party of 6, had our Sunday Dinner at Playa Del Carmen this afternoon and I cannot compliment them enough. The Mexican decor, including the beautifully painted, highly glossed tables, made you feel good as soon as you got the first peek into the dining room. The staff was warm and friendly, and we felt right at home. The owner came to the table and greeted us. We were brought 2 complimentary bowls of corn chips and salsa, and extra salsa after we finished what had already been a generous amount. The total time from getting out of the car to being served our entrees was 30 minutes. The food, six big plates full, plus two delicious desserts, larger than expected in size, was fabulous. We all thought that the total tab of $106 (entrees, beverages, and desserts) was very fair, for the good food, warm, friendly atmosphere, and caring service we received. A member of the staff stood outside the dining room to thank us for coming and chatted easily as one would when saying his good-byes to good friends. Thanks, Playa Del Carmen for such a pleasant and comfortable afternoon with our family! We will be back.
